Indian Navy Receives Major Boost with Induction of New Combatants

PM Modi inaugurated three indigenously-built frontline naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—during a ceremony in Mumbai on Wednesday, marking a significant boost to India’s maritime defense capabilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday commissioned three indigenously built frontline naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, showcasing India’s strides in defense manufacturing and strengthening maritime security.

NS Nilgiri is the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, which has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. The ship features advanced features for enhanced survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, the PMO said.

It is made with 75 per cent indigenous content and is equipped with weapon-sensor packages and advanced network-centric capabilities.

The Three Naval Combatants:

  1. INS Nilgiri
    • Type: First ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project.
    • Design: Created by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
    • Features: Advanced stealth capabilities, enhanced survivability, and superior seakeeping qualities.

      2. INS Surat

    • Type: Fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project.
    • Significance: Among the largest and most sophisticated destroyers globally.
    • Indigenous Content: 75% made in India.
    • Capabilities: Equipped with advanced weapon-sensor packages and network-centric systems.

 

 

      3.INS Vaghsheer

    • Type: Sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project.
    • Construction: Built in collaboration with the Naval Group of France.
    • Symbolism: Represents India’s growing expertise in submarine manufacturing.

Defence Minister Hails Commissioning Of Naval Combatants

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer, calling it a testament to India’s growing maritime strength. He emphasized that the milestone showcases the Indian Navy’s prowess and the nation’s increasing influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Singh stated, “The historic commissioning of these frontline combatants is not just a proud moment for the Indian Navy but also a reflection of India’s rising capability in defence manufacturing.”

He further highlighted the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean Region, noting that its importance has surpassed the Atlantic Ocean in the current global scenario. “In today’s dynamic geopolitical and economic landscape, the Indian Ocean has emerged as a pivotal area of focus,” Singh remarked.
